Tribute
to Nembang
The
sudden demise of Subash Chandra Nembang, a politically committed and a
prominent figure in the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (UML),
has left behind emptiness in the national political sphere. Over the years, he held
key positions such as chairman of the Constituent Assembly (CA) and the
chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, leaving behind an unforgettable mark
on the national political landscape. With
a background in law, he played a crucial role in the constitution-makingprocess, particularly during the promulgation of the 2015 constitution. With
his demise, the nation loses not just a leader but a guiding figure who has
been instrumental in shaping nation’s democratic process.
In
his 42-year-long political career, Nembang was known for his politics of
consensus, cooperation, and communication. Many were critical of his moderate
politics and his ambiguous role in converting Nepal into secular state during
constitution-drafting process. He had the ability to present disagreeable
topics in a dignified manner, something that has become uncommon in the national
political leadership. Political analysts used to label him as a gentleman of
Nepal's politics. He was among the less controversial political leaders who
understood the dynamics of national politics. His political legacy is also
distinguished by his commitment to the values of unity and consensus-building
in a critical national political atmosphere. The way he used to bring leaders possessing
differing ideas and ideologies together to forge consensus was extraordinarily
unmatched.He will
be remembered as a dignified politician who was never branded as a corrupt
leader.
