Will Arzu become the next PM?
Nepal has seen and experienced many favourable and unfavourable political changes during the last seven decades of its political history. The major political changes had occurred in 2017 BS, 2035 BS, 2046 BS and 2062/63 BS, taking the nation into different social and political courses. In the course of 70-plus years of its political phase, the country has seen as many as seven constitutions, and no elected Prime Minister(s) has completed their full five-year term in office. Now, the nation seems to be in its most vulnerable political situation owing to egoistic, irresponsible and self-cantered politics of senior leaders letting Nepal to be a political playground of external powers to serve their political interests. NEPALI POLITICS
Nepal’s latest constitution, drafted through the second Constituent Assembly and promulgated in 2015, appears to be incomplete in terms of addressing some of the burning national issues, such as the proper definition of citizenships, national boundary, economic development and foreign policy, among others in the changed context of Nepal’s new political structure. These issues seemed even to be overshadowed by the inter and intra-party conflicts owing to egoistic political acts of senior leaders which are not only damaging the image of multiparty democracy but also impacting the trust of the people in the political system. This might prove to be costly for them, considering the candidacy of independents challenging the political parties’ candidates in the recently held local elections.
नेपाल कता तिर ? One interesting article “Political activism of the first lady: Towards better or worse?”(THT,July 26, Page 4) must have drawn the readers’ attention. Arzu Rana Deuba, spouse of Prime Minister of Sher Bahadur Deuba, was the talk of the town, when her recent trip to India for her health check-up, strangely coincided with the visit of Pushpa Kamal Dahal to India. Looking at her political stunts in the recent days and the recent decision of the Nepali Congress to continue with five-party coalition until the upcoming provincial and federal elections; I will not be surprised if she, subject to winning a seat in the upcoming federal election, becomes the first lady Prime Minister of Nepal, if no major political changes occur in the country.
