Defaming constitution

 The Himalayan Times

7 October 2021

It is most unfortunate to see the politicians and their political parties playing destructive politics in the name of parliamentary democratic system, misusing the sovereign peoples’ mandate. Their past and the on-going unwanted and unproductive political activities for last three decades have enormously destroyed the concept, norms and values of people’s democracy and multi-party system, pushing the nation towards cultural, social and political chaos. The humble and patriotic attitude of the common people towards the nation seems to be gradually fading away due to the undemocratic and undisciplined guidance of the political leaders, thus tarnishing Nepal’s peace-loving national image in the international arena.

Expecting political stability in the country and the presence of a responsible government, the people had enthusiastically participated in the general elections based on the 2072 BS constitution and voted the then NCP to power, mandating it to form an almost two-thirds majority government. Owing to the irresponsible and egoistic attitude and power hunger of the senior leaders, the powerful government led by Oli was ousted in the middle of its five year term. Now, the Deuba-led five-party coalition government is in place for the last 84 days and has not been able to form a full-fledged government “Delay in coalition cabinet expansion: Shows absence of rational mindset” (THT, October 5, Page 4). What a shame this is for the coalition government.

On the other hand, the on-going frequent street protests of the pro-royalist and other fringe groups, chanting against the senior leaders of the major political parties for their irresponsible and corrupt acts, the flaws in the 2072 BS constitution and the MCC do not seem to be fading away soon, rather they are gaining momentum and popularity by day. This situation might invite political confrontations between and amongst the people for and against, which could be detrimental for the national security and push the nation towards never-ending political disorder. Also, the recent revelation of a five-point deal signed between the then King and the then seven-party-alliance in 2063 BS on a YouTube channel could be a political spark for political and social change.
