Ridiculing constitution

The Himalayan Times 30 September 2021 Ridiculing constitution It was not surprising to see the major political parties manipulating the constitution in the past also by amending some of the elements through ordinances for their political benefits. But, they never bothered to amend the constitution as demanded by the other parties even after signing the agreement to fulfil their demand. In fact, the promulgation of 2072 BS constitution was not welcomed by Tarai-based political parties and some other fringe parties. They still observe the Constitution Day as a black day.  Now, the Deuba-led coalition government, comprising five political parties, has started bulldozing some articles and elements of the constitution for its political benefits, undermining the mandate given by the sovereign people during the general elections. Previously, the Oli led government was widely criticised for its attempt to split the JSP-N by amending the Political Party Act (PPA) through an ord...

Govt vs. opposition

The Himalayan Times 23 September 2021 Govt vs. opposition Nepal and the people have been experiencing and the unwanted and unproductive political drama between and among the political parties and their senior leaders for the last three decades, pushing the nation towards political instability. The recent change in the government through the Supreme Court (SC) verdict has been surprising and unbelievable event in the political history of the country. There were different interpretations among the constitutional experts and political analysts about the SC’s verdict, citing it as unrealistic and irrelevant with regard to constitutional provisions. The on-going political tussle and hurdle between the government and the main opposition in the House does not give a positive indication for parliamentary democracy, for which they don’t get tired of boasting and claiming to be the champions of democracy. The role of speaker has been questionable for his sloppy action with regard to au...

Created in 2004, MCC provides time-limited grants and assistance to poor countries that meet rigorous standards for good governance, from fighting corruption to respecting democratic rights. The U.S. Government’s MCC and the Government of Nepal had signed a $500 million compact to spur economic growth and reduce poverty in Nepal on September 14,2017 in Washington. The then Nepali Minister of Finance Gyanendra Bahadur Karki had signed the agreement on behalf of the Nepal Government.  The compact mentions that Nepal faces extensive economic development challenges caused by an inadequate supply of electricity and high transportation costs to move both goods and people. The MCC Nepal Compact is designed to increase the availability of electricity and l...
