Downfall of Afghan government
The recent shocking political development in Afghanistan, a member of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries, has sent a huge political wave across the region and other parts of the globe. The external political interference in Afghanistan that started back in 2001, citing the role of al-Qaeda led by Osama Bin Laden in destroying the twin towers in the United State of America (USA), has been the main cause of political instability, and now the sudden downfall of the Afghan government following the departure of U.S forces “America's longest war: 20 years of missteps in Afghanistan! (THT, August 16, Page 1).
In fact, with the intention of taking revenge, the U.S government had toppled the Taliban government, which was blamed for sheltering and hosting al-Queda militants responsible for the 2001 hijacked plane attacks in New York. The decision of the Biden administration to pull out all the U.S forces from Afghanistan, undermining the Taliban militants’ strength seemed to be a mistake. America's longest war is nearing its end, leaving behind the country and the people at the mercy of the Taliban that have been fighting with NATO and U.S forces for the last 20 years for their existence in the county.
Time has come for other countries, including Nepal to be politically sensitive and cautious while dealing with the financial and technical assistance offered by the foreign powers. We can see frequent street protests these days in Kathmandu against the MCC programme to be funded by the U.S government, citing a hidden agenda, that is harmful to the sovereignty of Nepal. The senior leaders and the major political parties have been blamed for their ill-intention behind launching the MCC programme. The Deuba government is under pressure to deal with this programme wisely.
