Destructive development
The people of Nepal have seen many ups and downs in its
political history. They willingly or unwillingly and knowingly or unknowingly
came out to the streets as called upon by the major political parties for
political changes in the country. But, such changes, until now, seem to be only
beneficial for the politicians who never seemed to be serious and sincere for
the well-being of the country and its people.
Development is a process that creates growth, progress,
positive change or the addition of physical, economic, environmental, social
and demographic components. The purpose
of development is a rise in the level and quality of life of the population,
and the creation or expansion of local regional income and employment
opportunities, without damaging the resources of the environment. Development is visible and useful, not
necessarily immediately, and includes an aspect of quality change and the
creation of conditions for a continuation of that change.
But, our government does not mind in destroying century old culture,
tradition and inhabitants of local people in the name of development. Such
development cannot be seen as a constructive development. This is a destructive
development which is aimed to destroy and destabilize the century old social
and culture of indigenous habitats.
It is so sad to see the government using excessive forces to
suppress the voices of the local population who were protesting against the
government’s unilateral decision to grab their agricultural lands. It is still hoped that the government will reconsider its decision and let the local population enjoy their century old ingenious habitats.
