Poor warning system

Sometimes, Mother Nature deceives us in such a way that it becomes very difficult to forecast and dodge. The burden of such a natural disastrous becomes very heavy to bear.  It happens anywhere around the globe and any time of the year. We hear and read about the deadly flash floods, heavy landslides, windstorms and hurricanes displacing thousands of people and killing hundreds of them. However, the human casualties from such natural disasters in most of the developed countries happen to be much less because of their well preparedness.

In our case, may be, we talk much but work less. It might be one of the reasons the heavy human casualties in Bara and Parsa had to be witnessed on Sunday evening with great sorrow. The country’s only department responsible for weather forecasting severely lacks skilled human resources and sophisticated equipment needed for timely forecasting. Failure to predict an approaching powerful windstorm because of the lack of poor early warning system in place with the Meteorological Forecasting Division with zero preparedness at the ground level led to this dreadful situation.

In the past also, there were many human casualties and heavy infrastructural damages in the country due to natural calamities. It is true that natural calamities cannot be challenged but their effects can, however, be minimised. However, none of the past governments and the concerned authorities seemed serious in strengthening this division with proper and qualified human resources and appropriate technical equipment. As a result, we had to see this horrible heartbreaking incident and bear these huge human losses. Time has come for the government to immediately install much needed weather forecasting equipment and train the human resources.
