Peace and prosperity

Nepal and its people have witnessed and experienced a lot of political turmoil in the last seven decades in the name of bringing peace and prosperity in the country. One major political change that took place in 2062/63 had dethroned the 240- year monarchy and installed a secular republican state. The new constitution was promulgated on September 20, 2015. It took almost eight years to replace the interim constitution of 2007. During these years, major political parties ruled the country singly or jointly in their own ways giving little to the common people except hopes and false promises. It seems, however, the common people did not lose hope of seeing prosperous Nepal by enthusiastically participating in the elections especially in the last three tiers of general elections.

It has been almost fourteen months for the present powerful communist government running the country with almost two-third majority strength in the federal parliament. In-spite of many speculations about the unification process, the NCP has not been succeeded in naming the office bearers of the district chapters of all the 77 districts “NCP to hold general convention in a year” (THT, April 22, Page 1). The unification process was delayed for months due to disputes among the senior leaders of the then UML. Members of other committees and its sister wings are yet to be identified and nominated.

The onus of fulfilling people’s expectation is, without any doubt, on the ruling party during its remaining years of running the government. This government should have no excuses for this government for not fulfilling its promises made to the people. However, looking at its political performances until now, it does not seem encouraging. If this government fails to perform in the coming days, it would be very unfortunate for it in the next general election.
