Mystery remains

Since the restoration of democracy in 1990, most of the senior political leaders of the major political parties have made lots of promises. Some promises were fulfilled. However, most of their promises remain to be fulfilled. One of them was the Melamchi Drinking Water Project, a highly ambitious project launched in December 2000 to quench the thirst of Kathmandu’s inhabitants, which is still incomplete and uncertain if the project will be completed in near future. Likewise, there are other national priority projects which are yet to be completed.

What could be the possible reasons for these terrible irresponsible acts? Did this happen because of the ineffectiveness of the past and present governments? Were man-made hurdles intentionally put for delaying the completion of such projects for their personal interests? Were heavy commissions sought by the political leaders and bureaucrats from the contractors? Until now, these queries have not been addressed by any sides. One reason for sure could be the irresponsible role of some political leaders, lack of their commitment or accountability towards the nation and its people.

Let us look at the unification process of Nepal Communist Party that had started almost two years ago with high hopes and promises. It is yet to be seen whether the senior leaders will be able to wrap up the unification process by April 22 “NCP unification process stuck as deadline looms” (THT, Page 1, April 12). If not, what will happen is also to be seen. This is due to the personal interest of the senior leaders of the then UML and CPN-Maoist Centre in delaying the process. Whether the unification was done for the sake of the national interest or personal interest still remains a mystery.
