Peace and prosperity

The Himalayan Times 25 April 2019 Peace and prosperity Nepal and its people have witnessed and experienced a lot of political turmoil in the last seven decades in the name of bringing peace and prosperity in the country. One major political change that took place in 2062/63 had dethroned the 240- year monarchy and installed a secular republican state. The new constitution was promulgated on September 20, 2015. It took almost eight years to replace the interim constitution of 2007. During these years, major political parties ruled the country singly or jointly in their own ways giving little to the common people except hopes and false promises. It seems, however, the common people did not lose hope of seeing prosperous Nepal by enthusiastically participating in the elections especially in the last three tiers of general elections. It has been almost fourteen months for the present powerful communist government running the country with almost two-third majority strengt...

Mystery remains

The Himalayan Times 18 April 2019 Mystery remains Since the restoration of democracy in 1990, most of the senior political leaders of the major political parties have made lots of promises. Some promises were fulfilled. However, most of their promises remain to be fulfilled. One of them was the Melamchi Drinking Water Project, a highly ambitious project launched in December 2000 to quench the thirst of Kathmandu’s inhabitants, which is still incomplete and uncertain if the project will be completed in near future. Likewise, there are other national priority projects which are yet to be completed. What could be the possible reasons for these terrible irresponsible acts? Did this happen because of the ineffectiveness of the past and present governments? Were man-made hurdles intentionally put for delaying the completion of such projects ...

Resolve problem soon

The Himalayan Times 11 April 2019 Resolve problem soon We used to face many strikes and bandh called by sister organizations of the political parties in the past to press the government to fulfill their demands. Many sick and elderly people lost their lives on the way to hospitals due to these irresponsible and insensible acts. The political leadership in the country was occupied by senior leaders of major political parties following the restoration of democracy. But the common people were one way or the other had to suffer mentally, physically and economically due to the irresponsible behaviour of the political parties. The nation is now a republic and has entered the federal structure since the last two years. The government has restructured the civil servants’ positions and location based on the need of this structure as per the constitution. However, the three tiers of government are still facing difficulties to adjust their human resources to run governments a...

Poor warning system

The Himalayan Times 4 April 2019 Poor warning system Sometimes, Mother Nature deceives us in such a way that it becomes very difficult to forecast and dodge. The burden of such a natural disastrous becomes very heavy to bear.   It happens anywhere around the globe and any time of the year. We hear and read about the deadly flash floods, heavy landslides, windstorms and hurricanes displacing thousands of people and killing hundreds of them. However, the human casualties from such natural disasters in most of the developed countries happen to be much less because of their well preparedness.    In our case, may be, we talk much but work less. It might be one of the reasons the heavy human casualties in Bara and Parsa had to be witnessed on Sunday evening with great sorrow. The country’s only department responsible for weather forecasting severely lacks skilled human resources and sophisticated equipment needed for timely forecasting. Failure to predic...
