HEAVEN OR HELL?

HEAVEN OR HELL?

After the completion of three tiers of elections, it is hoped that Nepal has been moving forward leaving behind the political uncertainty and instability. It has started leaping forward in the path of peace and prosperity as claimed by the senior leaders of big parties in the recent days. Common people have started crossing fingers keeping high hopes of seeing a developed and prosperous Nepal. They have started dreaming of their children not suffering from hunger and thirst in the days to come. They also hope that none of their kids need to go beyond Nepal for employment, as promised by the left alliance during the elections.

Now, it was so encouraging to hear from PM Oli, who also co-chairs of the newly formed Nepal Communist Party (NCP), that Nepal will turn into “a heaven” in the next 10 years (“Nepal will be heaven in 10 years, says PM” May 20, Page 1). What fantastic news this is for the country and its people. However, in what way do we imagine this heaven? The Oli led government seems to be heavily working on establishing a set of criteria for which will guide his team for the next 10 years to convert Nepal into this heaven.

I would like remind the government that things are easier said than done, and in attempting to make Nepal a heaven it could be turned to hell instead. Every government in the past used to claim that Nepal would be generating 10,000 MW power “within the next 10 years”. It never happened. I salute Kulman Ghishing for his sincerity and commitment, to have been able to relieve the country from 18 hours load shedding without even generating that much power in the last four years. Accordingly, time now has come for the NCP government, which may be the most powerful government in the political history of Nepal, to fulfil all the promises it had made during the provincial and federal elections. This is important, instead of making tall, immeasurable claims about turning Nepal into “a heaven”-for all that it could mean.
