SHOCKING NEWS
Every Nepali, who heard about the killings
of 12 Nepali by the suicide blast in Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan on
June 20 must have been shocked and wondering as to why the Taliban extremists
attacked Nepali migrant workers (“Kabul incident a grim reminder”, 24 June, Page
1). There is no appropriate word for condemning such cruel, gruesome and
inhuman act. It is the second deadliest attack on unarmed Nepali migrant
workers in the foreign soil since the brutal murder of a dozen Nepali hostages
by an Islamic extremist outfit in Iraq in August 2004.
Millions of Nepali migrant workers are
found legally and illegally working in many parts of the world due mainly to the
lack of employment opportunities at home. So far, the government does not seem to
be bothered about retaining them in the country by creating jobs (“Lessons
from tragedy” 22 June, Page 6). Instead, it is happy to see billions of
rupees entering the nation in the form of remittance every month. Time and
again, it has been reported that many of these migrant workers are in jails for
overstaying or possessing illegal documents. And, some of them are lying on
hospital beds in an unconscious state for many months and many of them have become
disabled and even lost their lives.
What a pity it is to know and see our many semi-skilled
and unskilled youths sweating and dying in the foreign lands just for some
money? The government should find out as to why the Nepali migrant workers were
targeted in Kabul. It is the duty of the concerned ministry
and department also to ensure that the other migrant workers in Afghanistan are working in the green zone areas as allowed
by the government. The government should take this attack seriously and ensure
that other Nepali migrant workers in Afghanistan will be safe in the days ahead.
