Poor performance
The Oli led government has completed its
three months honeymoon period with unconvinced and unimpressed performance. It
was not able to perform to the satisfaction of the common people. Their daily
lives have been very difficult due to acute shortage of fuel and essential
goods. The government completely failed to curb the rampant corruption and
black marketing taking place right under its nose as reported in (“Government
has failed, says Jhalanath Khanal”, THT, 12 January, Page 3). The market prices
of daily essential foods have skyrocketed due to government’s ineffective
control mechanism in place. It is even heard and read that the government
employees and political cadres are found to be heavily involved in black
marketing (“Govt leaders, agitating parties into smuggling” THT, 12 January,
Page 3.
Khanal has directly accused the Oli led
government of failing to properly maintain law and order situation in the
country. The government has not been able to sort out the political and constitutional
problem with the agitating forces during the last three months and does not also
seem serious in resolving it in near future looking at the irresponsible
behaviour of government’s talk team members. It seems that the ruling parties
are trying to weaken the ongoing Madhes unrest by prolonging the dialogue with
Sanyukta Loktantric Madhes Morcha (SLMM) which could be harmful to both the
country and its people. Responsible ministers and leaders are found to be
talking about the demarcation of provinces in their own ways creating
confusions and ambiguousness of government’s talk team’s role (“Pledge to keep
Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari intact” THT, 12 January, Page 3).
However, it was encouraging to know from
Prime Minister KP Oli that the Tarai problem is moving ahead towards solution
(“Tarai problem heading towards solution: Oli” THT, 12 January, Page 2). If he
and representatives of his talk team are serious in resolving the ongoing Tarai
problem soon, they should not be trying to buy the time of SLMM talk team by
not showing up in the scheduled meetings. It is known to everybody that until
the Mashes unrest is resolved, smooth supply of fuel and other essential goods
cannot be ensured causing further hardship to the people and economically
pushing the country towards bankruptcy.
