ACT NOW
Time has come for the CIAA to
work with an iron fist to control the corruption rampant in the country (“CIAA
snubs House panels” 10 Dec. Page 1). Corruption has been institutionalized to
such an extent that even the watchdog is finding it difficult to catch big
fish. Having said that, it should not get distracted from its job of putting culprits
behind bars. The anti-graft body should disregard political interferences and
work to win the hearts of the common people who hold high hopes of seeing a strong
and impartial CIAA that works effectively to completely curb corruption
Still, the CIAA alone cannot do its
job well until and unless the political class and the government are equally
committed to its cause. The current CIAA chief seems committed to his
responsibility. Yet there is more, Lokman Singh and the CIAA team seem still to
be sparing cases of large-scale of corruption. I am sure the people want to see
the CIAA step up its act and net the big actors too.
Nepal has recently been ranked as one
of the most corrupt counties in the world. The credit for this goes to the
government and the political parties who do not mind institutionalising
corruption in the country. Most of the government and semi government organizations
are hubs of corruption where the service seekers are forced to pay bribes. Let
us hope that the CIAA with Karki at its helm starts will be more vigilant in
the coming days.
