Consensus is best option

The Himalayan Times 28 th November 2014 Consensus is best option Apropos of the news story “Modi stresses on consensus for statute” (THT, 26 Nov. Page 1), his call for consensus is timely when the ruling and oppositions are at odds over the issue. He has also emphasized need to draft the statute   in such a manner that no body should feel let down. Why don’t the major political parties become sensible and responsible leaving behind their petty political interests to sort out their political differences? Do they have to be told by outsiders to come to consensus? Are they not capable of doing their political jobs on their own without outside interferences? They had completely failed to complete their mandated jobs due to intra and inter party factional politics and blame game during the first Constitution Assembly. Both the opposition and ruling parties should be flexible as much as possible to adopt the statute on time. Rai Biren Bangdel Maha...

POLITICAL SINCERITY

The Kathmandu Post 28 th November 2014 POLITICAL SINCERITY Going by the current political climate, it does not seem as though the parties will reach an agreement and draft the new constitution within the stipulated time (“Modi bats for consensus” 26 Nov, Page 1) Why can’t the major political parties be sensible and responsible and leave their petty political interests behind to sort out their political differences? Do they have to be told by outsiders to come reach consensus for drafting the new constitution? Are not they capable of doing their jobs on their own without outside interferences? We all know that the parties had completely failed at their jobs due to intra and inter party factional politics and blame game during the first Constitution Assembly (CA). It seems as though this unproductive practice will continue to persist in the current CA too hampering the new constitution drafting process. Both the opposition and ruling parties should be as ...

Scary situation

Scary situation It has not been surprising to hear from the oppositions repeatedly saying that the ruling parties are flexing their political muscle based on the number of their law makers in the CA which might create political polarizations among them hampering the ongoing constitution drafting process. In a meeting with the representatives of Federation of Nepali Journalists recently in his residence, Dahal had opined that the constitution drafting process was in a complicated stage as reported in ”Constitution drafting in a difficult stage, says UCPN-Maoist boss”(THT, 19 Nov. Page 4) due to undermining the past agreements by the ruling parties. Looking closely at these political situations that are gradually developing in the Nepali politics, the chances of drafting the new constitution within the dead line seem dismal. What happens if the mandated job is not done by the political parties has been the concern of the common people. As claimed by Dahal, is there an...

Corruption in projects

The Himalayan Times 3 November 2014 Corruption in projects It was not surprising for me to read the news report “DFID projects creating graft opportunities in Nepal , says study” (THT, Nov 1, page 3). While contemplating my 25 years of working experience in the donor funded projects, DFID funded project could be one of them where irregularities have taken place in-spite of their internal control mechanism. It used to happen in the Swiss and Canadian funded projects in one way or the other though in varying degrees. Corruption is fraud and bribery, a serious crime. In the report submitted by the Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAD) on its finding about DFID funded projects in Nepal , it has used the word “corruption” which I found quite serious and I would therefore like to say one or two things about it. Until the community people, the real users of any donor or non-donor funded projects, are involved from the initial stages of the projects, chances o...
