Hard task
Approps of the news story “Three opposition
fronts announce stir” (THT, 7 Oct. Page 1). The opposition parties seem to have
teamed up for street protests at a time when they should have concentrated on
drafting the new constitution. The ruling parties should also bring other
dissidents on board for constitution drafting process. Looking at the ongoing
situation, the parties may not be able to come together to draft a consensus document
even this time.
How it will be possible for them to reach
consensus when they continue to stick to their guns with regard to federalism
and forms of governance? Opposition parties are calling for the implementation
of the agreement reached among the parties after the CA election. On the other
hand, the ruling parties have ignored the opposition’s demands based on their
strength in the CA, arguing that the disputed issues must be settled though
voting process if no consensus is reached.
If the parties miss the opportunity even this
time, the days ahead will be more complicated beyond their imagination. It’s
not only the ruling parties but also the opposition who need to act
responsibly.
