Stop foreign junkets now

It was indeed encouraging to read “Nembang to clip CA members’ wings” (THT, 12 May, Page 1) at such a crucial time when the lawmakers are supposed to spend their valuable time on drafting a new constitution rather than go on foreign trips in the name of acquiring first hand knowledge about federal structures. It seems that the CA Chairperson has timely realized his past mistakes for letting members set out for foreign junkets hampering the completion of their major task. In fact, the foreign diplomats should have also realized that inviting CA members to visit their countries would hamper the drafting of new constitution and acted accordingly.

However, we cannot blame them only for organizing such unproductive trips. Our CA members should have realized themselves about their prime responsibilities. Also, the CA Chairperson should put stringent rules in black and white for the CA members regarding foreign trips and other relevant jobs forcing them to strictly abide by it. Otherwise, requesting foreign diplomatic missions not to arrange any trips to their countries might not be the potential solutions unless our CA members behave and act themselves responsibly. In the erstwhile CA, many unproductive foreign junkets were made by them. Some of them had made even a dozen such trips leaving behind their chairs in the CA most of the time empty.

The people are keenly watching and observing every CA member’s activities this time and patiently waiting for Magh 8, 2071, the day all the political parties have promised to give a new constitution. It does not seem that they (the people) will this time easily let the leaders of major political parties off for any lame excuses. The level of frustration among the common people has risen so high that they (political parties) should not undermine it for their own existence.
