Honour people’s verdict

The second CA election is finally over. The end results of both PR and direct election are now publicly known. It was not surprising to see the people’s verdicts as they were tired of destructive politics during the last six years. None of the major political parties have been able to garner a two third majority. They have been clearly mandated to draft the new constitution within a year as they had promised in their political manifestos. It seems that the people would not want to see the country to be federated. If need arises to be federated, then it should be on a multi ethnicity identity system rather than on a single ethnicity based system. Likewise, one Madhes and one Prades concept has been clearly rejected by the people considering the defeat of Madesh based political parties.

It is encouraging to see that 30 political parties have been able to make it to the second CA as reported in “PR seats allotted, 30 parties make it to CA” (THT, 4 December, Page 1). However, considering the dissatisfaction expressed by UCPN (M) and other eight parties over the polls management, it does not seem that the second CA would be run smoothly. It is sad to see these parties not accepting the election results. It would be very unfortunate if they continue to grumble over the election result and disturb the smooth functioning of the CA that is supposed to draft the new constitution within one year.

On the other side, some of the leaders of major political parties have started raising their concern over the tenure of the incumbent President and Vice President based on the fresh mandate of the people. We are yet to see how the political parties would solve this issue. Also the formation of next government is another hot topic among the major political parties. Time has come for all the political parties represented in the CA, to be sensible, sincere and committed in drafting the new constitution within the stipulated time.
