CIAA’s activism

It was really encouraging to read the news report “CIAA chief Karki orders tax evaders booked” (THT, 14 August, Page 1) at such a time when his legitimacy to lead CIAA was questioned and even challenged at the Supreme Court. However, getting a clean chit from the court, his appointment to such controversial position began with high expectation from the people. During the past five months, it seems that he has been trying hard to clean his tainted image by chasing the corrupt officials of various organizations. Instructing the Inland Revenue Department to bring all the tax evaders to book has been his recent bold step towards his mission of bringing all the culprits to book.

It is not easy to completely root out the corruptions that have been deep-rooted and almost institutionalized everywhere. However, his effort of trying to bring the culprit to book deserves appreciation. His recent action of putting the Nepal Electricity and Nepal Telecom corrupt officials behind bars have encouraged people to closely watch his every move towards his mission of zero tolerance towards corruption. All the culprits who have been sucking in the hard-earned money of the people should not be spared. Financial crimes are serious crimes that should be dealt with in accordance with the state laws that had been made almost defunct for the last more than few years.

His instruction to bring all the lawyers, doctors, government and non-government organizations, hospitals, educational institutions and consultants among others into the tax net seems encouraging. It is yet to see as to how he and his office move forward to investigate the PLA camp corruption charges labelled against the top brass of UCPN-M. The people suspect that the big fish are found in the political sea. And Karki needs to exhibit real guts to catch them. Let us hope that he will not let the people down.
