Unnecessary bargaining

The Himalayan Times
8 February 2013
This is with reference to “UCPN-M likely to propose ex-CJ as new PM” (THT, 6 Feb.2013). It was not a bad idea of UCPN-M to hold election towards the end of May through a consensus government to be formed under the leadership of ex-Chief Justice as the chances of forming the new government from among the parties were becoming slim. If UCPN-M were serious in their words, why don’t the NC and UML agree to go along with their (UCPN-M) proposal for resolving the on-going political stalemate at the soonest possible? It seems to the common people that the opposition parties are unnecessarily bargaining for the PM’s chair rather than concentrating their effort on resolving the national issues.

The last four and half years have passed most unproductively in the political history of Republic Nepal. The so-called major political parties simply made the nation political hostage. They never seemed serious on drafting the new constitution within the allotted timeframe. They spent their valuable time in political blame game squabbling each other for this and that reason. We must thank them for simply pocketing their monthly perks and benefits out of people’s tax paid money without carrying out the mandated tasks. What a shame? The opposition is now out in the streets demanding Baburam Bhattarai’s (BRB) immediate departure from PM’s chair. This irresponsible act will simply lengthen BRB’s stay in power.

Surprisingly, the President, on the other side, has been tight-lipped since after his ninth time effort of pushing the major political parties to forge consensus. He completely failed in his mission. No body knows now what is he waiting for or what is in his mind regarding the current volatile situation of Nepal. The on-going political situation and constitutional crisis demands his constitutional authority. Time has come for him to show his political acumen and convince the major political parties to form a consensus government at the soonest possible and hold the election towards the end of May 2013 rather than letting the big parties act on their own.
