Its’ not surprising

The Himalayan Times

It was not surprising to read the news report “Opposition parties shift stance on polls” (THT, August 8, Page 1) with regard to NC and UML . The bosses have now started on high volume for new polls. Otherwise, they were earlier opposing the Dr. Baburam Bhattari (BRB) led coalition government’s call for CA election.

They seem extremely frustrated loosing their political title “Mananiyajeu”. That is why; they seem hell-bent after Dr. Baburam Bhattarai’s (BRB) resignation who cunningly killed CA, a few hours before its natural death. Does it make any sense to repeatedly ask BRB’s resignation who has been categorically labelled by the President as the care taker PM? Why don’t the oppositions name their common candidate as the new PM rather than hounding BRB for nothing? Why don’t they come to a consensus to hold fresh election on a suitable date and settle the on-going political and constitutional crisis soonest possible? The main issue is now to draft the “new constitution”. The sooner they forge consensus on type of election, the better would be for the nation to come out of the current political impasse and constitutional vacuum.

The President’s move to put frequent pressure on the political parties should be appreciated. The resent broader meeting called by him remained to be fruitful in terms of changing oppositions’ political stance. It would be extremely favourable political climate should all the political parties agree to form a care taker government of non political intellectuals and professionals with the assignment of holding fresh election. However, looking closely at the political parties’ charm towards Prime Ministerial chair, this option may not work. But sooner they agree on national issues and options, the better it would for them and the nation.
