Tug-o’-war

The Himalayan Times 19 August 2011 Once the Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal decided to resign soon after he realized that there would be no solid proposal with regard to peace process coming from the Maoists, the people might have already guessed that there would be another political tug of war between the NC and Maoists for leading the next government. In fact, UML remained, most of the post CA election time, to be opportunistic doing very little for the peace process and drafting of new statute. It seems now that it has lost its stake over the PM’s chair. It is yet to see how it will play its political card between NC and Maoist’s claim over the PM’s chair. It is hoped that this time UML sensibly uses its productive role. It was obvious that NC, sooner or later, would propose Sher Bahadur Deuba and Maoist’s candidate would be Dr. Babauram Bhattarai as reported in “NC to field Deuba as consensus prime minister” and “Maoists reinforce Bhattarai’s candidacy” (THT, August 17, Page 1). BE SINCERE NOW

The Kathmandu Post 19 August 2011 It was obvious to see, as soon as PM Jhalanath Khanal resigned, that the NC and Maoists would start claiming their rights to occupy the highest executive post (“Us first, then you, Dahal tells Deuba” August 12, Page 1) . The people might have already guessed that there would be another political tug of war between the NC and Maoists for leading the next government. It is yet to see as to how UML will play its political card in between NC and Maoist’s claim over the PM’s chair. It is hoped that this time UML will be sensibly. Why didn’t the NC and Maoists first sit together and forge consensus over one candidate as PM rather than filing separate candidates? The real litmus test for the Big Three is ahead considering the shaky political situation in their hands. August 31 is not too far away. Time has come for them to act sensibly. Countdown begins

The Himalayan Times 11 August 2011 Considering the ongoing snail-paced political progress during the last two months of CA’s three months extended period, there does seem much hope of seeing peace process and drafting of new constitution completed by 31 August 2011 . The Big Three spent the last two months merely on power games and interpreting their five-point deal in their own ways. Now, the NC is continuously obstructing the house for the last one week asking the PM Khanal to follow the five-point deal and resign accordingly by 13 August. His statement that was supposed to be read out by Deputy PM Bharat M. Adhikari yesterday afternoon in the parliament could not be done so due to last hour changes in the draft as reported “Maoists foil PM’s House address bid” (THT, August 9, Page 1) The terms “national” or “consensus” government and “new Nepal ” have been the political jargons of our political leaders. How come is it possible to form the national or consensus government of these 3...

EMANCIPATION

The Kathmandu Post 12 August 2011 The people are beginning to get nervous as the major political parties’ continue to play games even as deadline for the CA is fast approaching (“Great expectations” August 11, Page 6). It is clear now that all the parties have broken their promises to break away from the kind of politics that plagued us in the 1990s. They have completely engrossed themselves in power politics while pushing the nation towards uncertainty. As mentioned in the Editorial, there is no other alternative than to form a unity government through consensus among the Big Three. This is seemingly the only way to emancipate the nation from a looming political, social and economic crisis. Rai Biren Bangdel Maharajgunj, Kathmandu http://www.dataentryjobs.us/33120.html
